Ask the Arborist

Ask the Arborist - March 11

The Sustainability Commission invites you to join the Village Arborist for a FREE tree consultation. The Ask the Arborist program will be held on March 11, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Deerfield Public Library, 920 Waukegan Road.

The Arborist will give priority to questions submitted in advance and will take questions from the audience, if time permits.

In addition to answering resident’s specific tree-related questions, Village staff will discuss the Village’s programs and initiatives related to preserving the urban forest, heritage trees, the 50/50 Parkway Tree Program and other sustainable and native planting programs.

Attendees will receive a hard copy of Under the Canopy: Creating Personal Greenspace, a guide to selecting, planting and caring for trees in Illinois.

Women’s History Month Celebrated with  “Power With Purpose: Women Who Lead” Art Display

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Deerfield-based artist Kimberly Perl’s “Power With Purpose: Women Who Lead” series will be displayed at 12 businesses in the Village throughout the month of March as part of the Community Relations Commission’s Heritage Month Program.

The Village is acknowledging Women’s History Month in March by inviting members of the community to visit these portraits. All of the pieces will be available to see at a preview party where residents can meet the artist and learn more about the paintings and women featured in them at 5 p.m. today at the DBR Chamber of Commerce, 570 Lake Cook Road, Suite 114.

The public is invited to come view and be inspired by these amazing portraits of 12 powerful women, some of whom have perennially inspired the generations before us, and some who are making history even as we speak. One of these moving portraits, featuring Ruth Bader Ginsburg, has been shown at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the Houston Holocaust Museum

Waukegan Road Water Main Replacement

Waukegan Road Water Main Replacement Project Open House March 22

Starting this spring, aged water main that runs down the middle of Waukegan Road will be replaced between Deerfield Road and North Avenue. The $4 million project was previously planned for 2022, but moved to this year due to supply-chain issues.

With all of the new main pipes delivered earlier this year, the project is anticipated to begin in late March or early April and is expected to be completed by early September, weather depending.

The project was competitively bid and awarded to Lenny Hoffman Excavating by the Village Board in November 2022.

The contract includes the full replacement of all water main items within Waukegan Road from Deerfield Road to North Avenue and will require traffic to be reduced to one lane in each direction. Construction will be sequenced in a way to reduce impacts to the downtown area as well as the high school. Most of the work near Deerfield Road will be done overnight to not disrupt businesses in the area, but work in residential areas will take place during the day.

A public meeting will be held for area businesses on March 22 at 2 p.m. and a meeting for residents will be held on the same day at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held at the Village Hall Council Chambers.

Updates on the project will be shared via the Village website and interested parties can sign up to receive e-mail and/or text message updates on the project.

For more information, contact the Public Works Department at 847.317.7245.
