East Side Pump Station
(Updated 12-17-09)
Project Status: 100% COMPLETED
As part of the Stanley Engineering Report for upgrades and rehabilitation of the Village’s wastewater treatment facilities, it was recommended that the East Side Sanitary Pump Station at 297 River Road be completely replaced. Both buildings at this location were in decay and considerable upgrades to the existing pumps and controls needed to be addressed. The Village’s Engineering consultant, EarthTech Inc., prepared plans and specifications for complete replacement of these facilities. In fall of 2008 the construction contract for the East Side Pump Station Project was awarded to Keno and Sons Construction Company.
The East Side Pump Station is located at 297 River Road. It is accessed through the Briarwood Vista Subdivision. It is adjacent to the Briarwood Nature Area and the Middle Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River. The property & pre-existing buildings were both in the floodway and floodplain for the river.
Pre-existing Facilities: This station pumped approximately one third of all wastewater generated in the Village to the main treatment plant. The southerly building of the two on the site served as the Main Pump Building. It was last modified 31 years ago (1975) with new pumps and force main. The northerly building was a Standby Pump Building with one constant speed pump and the Emergency Generator.
New Facilities: The Village's consultant, Stanley Consultants performed a general assessment of the existing facilities and evaluated the station and equipment with respect to rehabilitation. A few additions were recommended at the suggestion of staff, such as bypass facilities and telemetry. An abbreviated list of improvements includes:
-
Replace ventilation systems.
-
Replace corroded piping, valves and equipment.
-
Replace pumps.
-
Install connections, valves and piping to make provisions for bypass pumping.
-
Enclose wet wells for odor control and seal off from the equipment rooms.
-
Install hazardous gas detection systems.
-
Replace motor control centers, variable speed drives, and controls.
-
Improve lighting.
