2011 Bridge Replacement Projects

Project Status: COMPLETED

Project Start: September 22, 2011
Project Completion: December 1, 2011

The Central Avenue Bridge, which has been closed for reconstruction since September 22, reopened to traffic on Wednesday November 9, 2011.  The bridge work was awarded to Illinois Constructors Corporation by the Village of Deerfield Board of Trustees in July of 2011.  The work was completed on time and within budget.

A similar project is currently under way on Juniper Court within the Village.  This bridge is tentatively scheduled to be open to traffic next Wednesday (November 16, 2011).

If you have any questions or need additional information regarding this project please contact Robert Phillips, Assistant Village Engineer, at 847-317-2490.

In the fall of 2008, the Village of Deerfield contracted with URS Corporation to complete a preliminary evaluation, prepare design plans and bidding documents, and perform construction engineering services for the rehabilitation of two bridges in Deerfield. The first of the two bridges, the Central Avenue Bridge, is located on Central Avenue approximately 1,000 feet west of Elm Street. This bridge carries Central Avenue over the west fork of the north branch of the Chicago River. The second bridge, the Juniper Court Bridge, is located on Juniper Court between Arbor Vitae Road and Cedar Street. This bridge carries Juniper Court over the west fork of the north branch of the Chicago River. Both bridges are safe, but in need of reconstruction according to Illinois Department of Transportation standards, and 80% of project costs are being provided by a federal grant.

The planning and design process was completed in December of 2010 and the Village expects to begin construction this fall. Each bridge will be closed during its construction which is expected to take 60 calendar days, for the Central Avenue Bridge, and 25 calendar days, for the Juniper Court Bridge.  They will be constructed on separate schedules by the Illinois Constructors Corporation. The Central Avenue Bridge work is scheduled to begin the week of September 26, 2011 and be completed by late November. The Juniper Court Bridge project is scheduled to begin the second week of October 2011 and be completed by late November. The exact start date for the work may vary depending upon the delivery of materials. Traffic detours will be in place to facilitate better traffic flow and emergency vehicle access should it be necessary. A map of the detour route can be viewed below.
