When a stranger calls and asks you to wire them money- “Just Hang Up!”

There is an active sophisticated phone scam targeting not only our residents, but taxpayers throughout the country. Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license.

The Deerfield Police Department has received several reports from businesses involving a current phone scam where someone claims to be from ComEd and demands immediate payment or their service will be disconnected.
