During the month of April, the Deerfield Police Department is supporting National Distracted Driving Awareness Month through educating the public and enforcing the laws addressing this public safety issue.

Effective Jan. 1, 2014, Illinois law bans the use of cell phones while driving, including reading or sending text messages and emails. Cell phone use is permitted only if using a hands-free device or Bluetooth technology. Violations of the law are considered moving violations and may result in a fine of $75 with a second offense carrying a fine up to $100.
