Ash Tree Removal to Begin in May

In March, 2011, the Village of Deerfield discovered the local presence of a highly destructive insect known as the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The Emerald Ash Borer is a small, metallic green, non-native invasive pest whose larvae feast on the trunks of ash trees, ultimately disrupting their ability to transport nutrients and causing the tree’s eventual decline and death.

The Village started removing trees in 2012 starting with trees that were in the worst condition and posed the biggest hazard to the public. This year, the trees were reassessed and trees that have declined in health and shown outward signs of EAB will be removed.
Starting in mid-May, the Village, along with a contractor, will begin the removal of ash trees that were deemed hazardous or confirmed with EAB. Home Owners will receive notice that their tree(s) will be removed and information regarding EAB.
Certain areas of the Village will be affected more than others depending on the population of ash trees. Some streets in town will see major changes to its landscape with the removal of the trees. The Village will be replanting trees to minimize the effect of this loss of canopy.
Information about EAB can be found here.
