Avoiding Telephone Scams: Just Hang Up!
When a stranger calls and asks you to wire them money- “Just Hang Up!”
The “Just Hang Up” campaign, created by the Illinois Attorney General's office, is designed to educate citizens about telephone and money transfer scams. The campaign addresses the two following issues:
• The Just Hang Up piece educates consumers about the signs of fraud over the phone, and relays the message to “just hang up” on fraud.
• The Money Transfer piece explains what wire fraud looks like, with examples of letters and fake checks. This piece also includes tips to avoid becoming a victim of a money transfer scam.

Additionally, if you haven't already, register (for free) with The National Do Not Call Registry by either calling: 888-382-1222 or using the link: https://www.donotcall.gov/. The Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home or on your cell phone. Most telemarketers should not call your home once your number has been on the Registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint with the Registry.
Please contant the Deerfield Police Department at 847-945-8636 or the Illinois Attorney General's Consumer Fraud Hotline at 800-386-5438 if you have been a victim to or want to report either of the scams outlined above.
