Beginning January 1, 2012 the Illinois Electronics Products Recycling and Reuse Act landfill ban for certain electronic devices will take effect. Under the Act electronic items such as televisions, monitors, computers, fax machines, VCRs, scanners and printers will no longer be allowed in regular trash.
Waste Management drivers will tag any electronic items that cannot be picked up. Residents can call Waste Management at, 800/796.9696 and be directed to a free drop-off location in the area. Residents also have the option to pay $25 and Waste Management will pick up 3 items. Note that only one of the items can be a television and each additional television will cost $25.
In addition to free electronic drop-off centers and Waste Management's special home pick-up service (fee for this service), residents may want to consider other E-waste recycling and reuse options including the donation of good working equipment to a charitable organization, or taking E-waste to a retail store that accepts electronics for recycling.
For more information, please contact Waste Management at 800/796.9696 or email questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
