Department Overview
The Public Works and Engineering Department has the greatest breadth and variety of responsibilities of any Village department by providing many of the basic services that affect the daily lives of everyone who lives and works in Deerfield. Primarily, the responsibilities encompass the administration, planning, maintenance, construction management and technical engineering of the Village’s infrastructure. The Village infrastructure includes the transportation system, stormwater collection system, water supply and distribution systems, sanitary sewer treatment and collection and other capital facilities. Our goal is to provide efficient and reliable infrastructure essential to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public and to enhance the quality of life for the residents, businesses, and guests. We endeavor to accomplish these tasks efficiently and with a high level of customer service to the community we serve.
The responsibilities of the Public Works Department include maintenance and repair of the Village infrastructure, property and equipment . This includes water distribution, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment, street maintenance, landscaping, and vehicle maintenance. The Department also provides snow and ice control, flood assistance and leaf pick up in the fall. The department is divided into five divisions: Water, Streets, Sewer, Wastewater Treatment Plant , and Garage.
The Engineering Department oversees the design, development, and construction of public facilities and capital improvements for Village projects and private development projects within the Village. These facilities include roadways, water supply, wastewater treatment plant and storm drainage. In addition, this department is responsible for issuing permits for any work to be performed on Village property or within Village right-of-way. This department also secures funding for projects, seeks funds from outside agencies (state and federal sources) and prepares all required project documentation and regulatory agency reports.
